Craterocephalus laisapi is a freshwater fish species from the Old World earfish family (Atherinidae) that is endemic to the East Timorese river Irasiquero . It is the only species of the genus hard-headed ( Craterocephalus ) outside of Australia and southern New Guinea .
features
Craterocephalus laisapi reaches a length of 3.9 (females) to 4.2 (males) cm. The species has an elongated, spindle-shaped body, a divided dorsal fin, pectoral fins set relatively high on the sides, a thin, silvery central longitudinal stripe and is without a side line . Craterocephalus laisapi differs from the very similar-looking fish Craterocephalus centralis from central Australia and the Western Australian Craterocephalus cuneiceps mainly in the long gill rays , especially the upper ones are noticeably long, while the gill rays of other hard-heads living in freshwater are short and barely noticeable.
