Cray XK7

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cray XK7 is the name of the next generation of the XK6 and XT5 technology, which Cray Research uses for large supercomputers as a hybrid cluster of CPUs and GPUs. The Jaguar operated by the American Oak Ridge National Laboratory was gradually converted to XK7 nodes. After the conversion was completed, it was given the new name Titan . The computing power increased from 2.3 to 17.59 PetaFLOPS . The upgrade cost $ 97 million. The computer is housed in 200 racks , called cabinets. The supercomputer will be used to research new biofuels, more economical combustion engines, more powerful solar cells, etc. In addition, operations in the fields of medicine, geology and research into new materials are planned.

Specifications

The equipment of an XK7 rack can contain:

  • Processors: 4 AMD Opteron 6200-64bit processors (16 cores) and 4 Nvidia Tesla K20 GPUs are housed on a blade (plug-in board); a rack has space for 24 blades, which corresponds to 96 CPUs and 96 GPUs per rack. Up to 1536 CPU cores can therefore be located in one rack.
  • RAM: 16 or 32 GB registered ECC DDR3-SDRAM per CPU; 6 GB GDDR5 per GPU
  • Internal bus: 2 Gemini ASICs per blade; a Gemini chip has 48 switch ports and is connected to the computing nodes with HyperTransport 3.0 ; the topology corresponds to a three-dimensional torus geometry.
  • External I / O interfaces: InfiniBand , 10 Gigabit Ethernet , Fiber Channel (FC) and Ethernet
  • Data storage system: disk arrays connected via Fiber Channel for Fiber Channel or SATA drives
  • File system: Luster , other file systems can also be accessed via Crays Data Virtualization Service
  • Operating system: Cray Linux Environment , includes a SUSE Linux Enterprise Server environment and Crays Compute Node Linux
  • Dimensions: height: 2.36 m, width: 0.57 m, depth: 1.44 m
  • Weight (air-cooled): 725 kg, (with liquid cooling): 907 kg
  • Power consumption: 45 to 54.1 kW
  • Cooling: air or optionally liquid cooling

Titan will consist of a total of 200 XK7 racks with 18688 CPUs and a maximum of 18688 GPUs.
