Crewkerne Castle (also Castle Hill or Croft Castle ) is an abandoned castle northwest of the town of Crewkerne in the English county of Somerset . A moth probably once stood here .

history

The ruins of Crewkerne Castle is a 140 meter high elevation that has been referred to as the location of a former castle since 1839 at the latest. Archaeological and geophysical studies have uncovered a moat around the summit with a square of masonry inside; fragments of clay dishes from the 12th century have also been found here. One theory assigns the finds to a Norman moth, another to a 13th century mansion . Or it could have been a local folly .

The manor was given to Richard de Redvers as a fief in 1107 by King Henry I and it is believed that his son, Baldwin , built a first building on the hill. In 1150 the Bishop of Salisbury received the knightly services associated with the castle.
