Cristóbal de las Casas
Cristóbal de las Casas (* 1530 ; † 1576 ) was a Spanish Italianist and lexicographer .
life and work
Casas was the author of the first alphabetical bilingual dictionary Italian-Spanish, Spanish-Italian:
- Vocabulario de las dos lenguas toscana y castellana , Seville 1570 (496 pages), 1579, 1583; Venice 1576, 1582, 1587, 1591, 1594, 1604, 1608, 1618, 1622; ed. by A. David Kossof, Madrid 1988 (24 + 248 pages, foreword by Juan M. Lope Blanch)
The Italian-Spanish part translates 15,500 words; the Spanish-Italian part is based on the dictionary by Antonio de Nebrija and translates 10,000 words. The Italian editions from 1587 onwards are edited by Camillo Camilli († 1615 in Dubrovnik).
