María Cristina Narbona Ruiz (born July 29, 1951 in Madrid ) is a Spanish politician who is currently chairwoman of the Partido Socialista Obrero Español (PSOE). The economist is currently First Vice-President of the Senado , and from April 2004 to April 2008 she was Environment Minister in the government of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero .

Career

Narbona grew up in Italy, where she studied economics in Rome . In 1975 she returned to Spain and from then on taught at the University of Seville . In 1993 she joined the PSOE, but had previously been Minister of Economic Affairs in a PSOE-led government in Andalusia . After joining the party, she was appointed State Secretary for Environment and Housing. In the 1996 general election , she was elected to the Congreso de los Diputados . In 1999 she became city councilor of Madrid and was elected to the national executive committee of the PSOE in the same year, chaired by José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero. After the victory of the socialists in the parliamentary elections in 2004 and the subsequent election of Rodríguez Zapatero as prime minister, she was appointed environment minister. After the following elections in 2008 , she was replaced as minister by Elena Espinosa and moved to the OECD as Spain's ambassador .

In December 2012, Narbona resigned when she became head of the Consejo de Seguridad Nuclear - the national council for nuclear safety. She held this office until 2017. In June of the same year she was elected party chairman at the Federal Congress of the PSOE. As a result, she ran for the PSOE in first place in the 2019 parliamentary elections and was elected to the Senado. In the constituent session on May 21st of that year, she was elected First Vice-President of the Chamber of Parliament.
