María Elena Espinosa Mangana (born March 21, 1960 in Ourense ) is a Spanish politician of the PSOE and manager . Between 2004 and 2010 she was Minister for Agriculture and the Environment.

Career

Espinosa studied economics at the University of Santiago de Compostela . Between 1988 and 1996 she headed the Port Authority of Vigo . She then worked briefly for the Galician Institute of Technical Medicine before joining the shipbuilder Rodman as Finance Director . There she moved up to the board in 2002.

After the parliamentary elections in 2004 , the newly elected Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez appointed Zapatero Espinosa to his cabinet as Minister for Agriculture and the Environment. In autumn 2010 there was a major reshuffle of the cabinet, in which some ministries were merged to save administrative costs and as a result, for the first time in the history of Spain, more female than male ministers were represented. In this context, Espinosa was replaced by Rosa Aguilar . Environmental organizations criticized Espinosa's term of office, among other things because too little impetus had been given in the direction of environmental protection .

In March 2012, Espinosa ran against incumbent Pachi Vázquez in the election of General Secretary of the Galician PSOE organization, but was not elected, 33 votes behind. A short time later, she turned her back on politics and returned to Rodman.
