Coordinates: 18 ° 12 ′ S , 142 ° 14 ′ E The Shire of Croydon is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Queensland . The area is 29,498 km² and has about 300 inhabitants.
geography
The Shire is located in the north of the state at the southern end of the Cape York Peninsula about 1,510 km northeast of the capital Brisbane .
The only place and administrative seat of the LGA is Croydon .
history
The area is named after the hometown of an English settler who founded a cattle ranch called Croydon Downs there in the 19th century. The village of Croydon was created after gold was found in the area and was given local administration in 1887.

The Croydon Shire Council has five members. The Mayor and four other Councilors are elected by all residents of the Shire. The LGA is not divided into electoral districts.
