Crystal Castles is the self-titled debut album of Canadian electric duo Crystal Castles . It was released on March 18, 2008 on Lies Records.
content
The album is a compilation of the band's previous sold-out singles, early unreleased tracks, and three new productions recorded especially for the album. The album fluctuates between aggressive Electropunk pieces ( "Alice Practice", "Xxzxcuzx Me" ), quieter electro pieces ( "Untrust Us", "Magic Spells", "Vanished" ) and a swivel into the Shoegaze / Dream-Pop - Genre with "Tell Me What To Swallow" .
The track "Alice Practice" is an improvised microphone test which the label liked so much that it was added to the album (without Alice Glass' knowledge).
Artwork
The actual cover, which should adorn the album, was a Madonna photo by Trevor Brown. But the label distributors in the USA refused to sell an album with a Madonna face and without any content from Madonna. Brown, the photographer, also opposed the use of the photo. In the end, a photo of the two band members standing bent over in front of a garage was used as a simple artwork.
Reviews
All in all, the album was well received by critics. Pitchfork Media praised the band's vitality on the one hand, but also that unpredictability was a central element of the record. The site awarded 7.8 / 10 points to the album.
Harald Jakobs awards 7/10 points on Plattentests.de and writes:
“A good, rather slowly dancing album that savored the pain of a little robot soul to the full is" Crystal Castles ", but despite the discussions about the integrity of the band. The rest may just be your understanding of punk ethics. "
