Crystal Caves is a computer game , which in 1991 by Apogee Software was released in three episodes. The game uses the same engine as the later Secret Agent .
history
Mylo Steamwitz is a hopeless soldier of fortune who wants a simple life in wealth. In order to achieve this goal, he initially plans to breed twibbles (an allusion to the tribbles from the TV series Star Trek ), later to breed snails and ultimately finds his calling in a fast food restaurant. To finance these companies, he mines gemstones in the Altair system .
Gameplay
The player has to collect all gems on a celestial body in each sub-level of a mine. Enemy monsters stand in his way, which can be eliminated with a rocket pistol. In addition, various doors have to be opened and elevators switched on. Other obstacles such as stalactites, stalagmites, and toadstool must also be avoided. The level design also allows situations with no profit opportunity, which means that appropriate planning of the solution is necessary. The player has an infinite number of lives available, but when the character dies, the lost level is reset.
There are various items that can be collected by the player and that give more ammunition for the rocket pistol or a point bonus. Several powerups can also be found, but their effect is limited in time.
An innovation in this game was that at least one level was rotated by 180 °, so that the gravity for the character is on the ceiling.
Patch
14 years after the game was released, Apogee released a patch for the game on October 24, 2005 to fix a Windows XP -specific bug, which according to the relevant press release represents a record in terms of long-term support .
