Csíkszentmihályi was born as the son of the Hungarian consul in what is now Rijeka (Croatia), which was then part of Italy . He taught business management at Claremont Graduate University in California .

In 1975 he described the flow experience . He is regarded as the most outstanding scientist in this field, but is not the first to discover the concept (cf. for example Kurt Hahn 1908 with his “creative passion”, which is largely synonymous, Maria Montessori with “ polarization of attention ” and Abraham Maslow with “peak experience”).

In 1997 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 2011 he was awarded the Széchenyi Prize .
