Cuby + Blizzards is a Dutch blues band. The band was founded in the 1960s in the province of Drenthe by Harry "Cuby" Muskee and Eelco Gelling.

Band history

Cuby + Blizzards (1966)

Since its inception, the band has been affected by several line-up changes and renaming. In addition to the founding members, its members included internationally recognized Dutch musicians such as Herman Brood (Herman Brood & His Wild Romance), Peter de Leeuwe ( Ekseption ), Cesar Zuiderwijk ( Golden Earring ), Herman van Boeyen ( Vitesse ).

Cuby + Blizzards made tours with Eddie Boyd , Alexis Korner and Van Morrison , some of which were also released as an album. In addition to the musicians mentioned, Muskee also had contacts with John Mayall, the "father of the English blues".

During the period of international success, the band received the coveted " Edison Award " for the LP Desolation in the Netherlands .

After Muskee and Gelling founded a new, but not very successful project "Red, White & Blue Band" in the mid-1970s, they renamed the band again to Cuby + Blizzards.

After Gelling left for Golden Earring in 1977, Muskee changed the band name to "Harry Muskee Band, Muskee Gang" and later to "Muskee".

In the 1990s there was another band called "Cuby + Blizzards".

In 2004 the band made a theater tour about the blues idol John Lee Hooker . Muskee had come to the blues in particular through the album "John Lee Hooker, Concert At Newport" .

In addition to his work as a musician, Muskee was employed by "RTV Drenthe", a regional radio station. For the station he made a study trip "on the trail of the blues" to the USA .

After the Golden Earring, Eelco Gelling worked for various bands (including the "Free Lance Band", the "Muskee Gang" and the "Blues Connection"). In the meantime he has founded his own band, the "Eelco Gelling Band".

In October 2006 Cuby + Blizzards gave an anniversary concert on the occasion of their 40th anniversary, which was also recorded for Dutch television.

Harry Muskee died on September 26, 2011.
