Cueva de Palomas I
The Cueva de Palomas I ( German pigeon cave ) is a cave with rock paintings in Tarifa in the province of Cádiz in Spain . It belongs to the group of caves with rock paintings of southern art ( Spanish Arte Sureño )
The cave was discovered by Henri Breuil (1877–1961) in 1929 and published in his work on rock art in southern Andalusia. In it he describes a Neolithic and Copper Age group that was later examined in detail by several authors. It is located about 250 meters above sea level in the Sierra del Pedregoso next to the three caves Cueva de Palomas II, III and IV, which are located on the same ridge.
Palomas I has two entrances, one ten meters above the other. The first is open to the southeast and is about 13.0 meters in diameter, while the lower opens to the opposite side and is about 6.0 meters wide. In the cave there is an area on the east wall with paintings 4.6 meters long, the largest known in the region, as well as individual pictures and a zoomorphic representation in the west. In the main picture there are numerous anthropomorphic and zoomorphic representations that were interpreted as hunting scenes and livestock farming. The pictures are from different eras and are schematic and semi-schematic. On the east wall there are several schematic pictures depicting a flock with a shepherd.
With these signs, a representation of the outline of a very faint brown horse's head appears, which, due to its style, suggests a Paleolithic representation. If so, this would be the only example of Franco-Cantabrian cave art in the region.
