The stalactite cave Tito Bustillo is known for its Stone Age cave paintings and is part of the Ardines massif, a karst system near Ribadesella , Asturias , Spain . The paintings belong to the Franco-Cantabrian cave art and are part of the UNESCO World Heritage .

history

The cave was inhabited by Cro-Magnon people until the tenth millennium BC . Due to a fall, the original entrance to the cave was sealed thousands of years ago, which favored the preservation of objects, tools and wall paintings.

The cave was discovered on March 18, 1968 by a group of Spanish speleologists. One of the discoverers, Celestino Fernández "Tito" Bustillo, died shortly after the discovery in a mountain accident. Then the cave was named "Cueva de Tito Bustillo" in his honor. It is also known under the name of the entry hole as "Cueva del Pozu'l Ramu" ( Asturian ). The researchers discovered the cave through this hole .

The cave has been explored since it was discovered. The inventory included objects from the late Magdalenian and Upper Palaeolithic , some harpoons made of bones and a goat's head carved from stag horn. With numerous well-preserved prehistoric paintings, it is one of the most impressive examples of paleoculture in northwestern Spain. The oldest of these paintings depicts people and is approximately 33,000 years old as determined by radiocarbon dating. Some scientists believe that Neanderthals may have painted the pictures, although this theory has not been proven.

The motifs in the various galleries of the cave are horses, deer, elk and even a marine animal, probably a whale. There are also images that represent female genitals and are considered fertility symbols.

The UNESCO took the cave in 2008 on the List of World Heritage in.
