location

Former quarry on the left and the cave on the right

About two kilometers southwest of the village of La Tour-Blanche, along the RD 84 , there are former underground mining areas for turonic limestone. The Jovelle Cave, owned by the Dordogne department since 2006, is located on the site of one of these quarries, a few hundred meters from the ruins of Jovelle Castle .

Discovery and Description

In the fall of 1983 Christian Carcauzon came across existing animal drawings on the walls near the cave entrance.

Norbert Aujoulat examined these more closely and identified scratch drawings of a mammoth , an ibex and a horse . Other animal images could not be pinpointed as they were partially covered by debris that had piled up on the ground from quarrying activities well into the 1940s.

In terms of style, the drawings, dated to the Upper Paleolithic , are reminiscent of the engraved animal figures in the cave of Pair-non-Pair in the neighboring Gironde department .

The remains of reindeer and horse bones were found on the floor , as well as prehistoric tools such as chisels and scrapers . Pottery shards dating back to the Iron Age have also been excavated .
