Mark Gower (born October 5, 1978 in Edmonton ) is an English football player . The midfielder , who can be used both centrally and on the flanks, began his career at Tottenham Hotspur . His path then took him to Swansea City in 2008 via sub-class teams . He is still under contract with the club, but was awarded to Charlton Athletic in the second half of the 2012/13 season .

Career

Beginnings

Gower, who was born in London's Borough Enfield , began his career at neighboring club Tottenham Hotspur . At the Spurs he failed to play in the first team, so he was awarded in the second half of the 1998/99 season to the Scottish first division club Motherwell FC . While he scored once in nine games for Motherwell, he did not play a league game for Tottenham in five years and only played two League Cup games. Therefore, he moved to FC Barnet at the beginning of the 2001/02 season , which was at that time in the Conference National , the fifth division. After two years and over 90 competitive appearances, he joined the third division Southend United in the summer of 2003 . With the Shrimpers he reached the final of the Football League Trophy in each of the first two years , but failed in each final. The game operation in the league, however, turned out to be far more successful, as after the restructuring of the English league system from the third-rate Football League Two to Football League One (2005) and the next year, the march straight through to the second division . When the team did not manage to stay in the 2007/08 season, Gower refused a contract extension and left the club after over 200 league games.

Swansea City

As a freelance player, he joined the Welsh second division club Swansea City in the summer of 2008 on a free transfer . While he was primarily used on the flanks in his career so far, he moved to central midfield with the Swans . From the start, Gower played in the starting line-up, completed at least 30 league games in each of the first three years and was thus instrumental in the team's promotion to the Premier League in 2011. In November 2010 he had extended his contract with Swansea City. With the rise, however, a personnel restructuring was connected, so that he lost his regular place. In the 2011/12 season he was mostly substituted on, but still made 20 appearances. In the second first division year - Gower was already 34 years old - he was only once in the squad on the first match day and was therefore awarded to the second division club Charlton Athletic for the second half of the 2012/13 season .
