Cuisnahuat ( Nawat Kwisnāwat ) is a municipality in El Salvador in the Sonsonate department .

Surname

The name Kwisnawat can be translated as "water (river) of the four thorns". According to this version, the first component cuis is said to go back to Nawat witz , "thorn"; nawi is “four” and at “water”. Another possible explanation is "four rivers from heaven (or from above)", since kwis means "heaven".

history

Cuisnahuat was founded by Pipil and belonged to the rule of Cuzcatlan . In 1528 it was conquered by the Spanish.

On June 12, 1824, the village of Cuisnahuat became part of the Partido Opico in the Department of San Salvador. On April 6, 1827 the Partido Izalco took place in the Department of Sonsonate.

Pipil culture today

According to the last census of El Salvador in 2007, Cuisnahuat is one of the few places where there are still speakers of the Pipil language Nawat , 15 of 97 speakers nationwide. Due to the efforts of the indigenous organization Asociación Coordinadora de Comunidades Indígenas de El Salvador (ACCIES) and the University of Don Bosco in San Salvador , teaching is carried out at a school in Cuisnahuat Nawat despite the lack of state programs.
