Culzean Castle
Culzean Castle ( [kʌˈleɪn] from Middle English "cul-Ȝ-ean" (see: Ȝ )) is a castle between Maybole and Maidens in the former district of Carrick on the coast of South Ayrshire . It was designed as a romantic castle by Robert Adam for David Kennedy, 10th Earl of Cassilis , in the 18th century . It stands on a steep cliff overlooking the sea, surrounded by a two hectare large castle park with Swan Lake, adventure playground and forest paths.
Also noteworthy is the gas system that was used to produce town gas from coal for lighting and heating purposes until 1940 . Today there is a permanent exhibition for William Murdock .
In 1945 the Castle was handed over by the Kennedys to the National Trust for Scotland (NTS), which markets and maintains it to this day. In recognition of his services to the liberation of Great Britain during the Second World War , General and later President Dwight D. Eisenhower had previously been given the top floor by the Kennedys for life. There is also an exhibition about him in the Castle.
It has now become one of the most visited tourist attractions in the Ayr area , attracting thousands of visitors every year.
