The Currituck Island is a 11km long island with numerous small coves off the coast of the East Antarctic Wilke country . It is located in the Highjump Archipelago on the northwest side of the Edisto Canal .
It was mapped using aerial photographs from Operation Highjump (1946–1947). The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named the island after the USS Currituck , flagship of the operation's western team. At that time, the northern part of the island was considered a separate island and named Mohaupt Island after Harold Ernest Mohaupt (1916–1971), a crew member on flights during Operation Highjump. Participants of the Second Soviet Antarctic Expedition (1956–1958) cleared this mistake out.
