The Highjump Archipelago is a group of rocky islands , rocky reefs and ice peaks that cover an area of 80 km in length and 8 to 24 km in width off the coasts of the East Antarctic Wilkesland and Queen Marie Land . The archipelago is mainly north of the Bunger Hills and stretches from the Taylor Islands immediately northwest of Cape Hordern to a striking group of ice peaks that end approximately west of Cape Elliott . In addition to the Taylor Islands, Thomas Island , Fuller Island , Foster Island , Dieglman Island , Currituck Island , Tschorny Island and the Mariner Islands belong to the archipelago.
The area was mapped using aerial photographs taken during Operation Highjump (1946–1947) led by the US polar explorer Richard Evelyn Byrd . The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named the archipelago after Byrd's expedition in 1955.
