The Tschorny Island ( Russian О́стров Чёрный , Ostrow Tschorny ; English Chërnyy Island ) is a small island in the Highjump Archipelago , which is about 800 m south of the eastern end of Thomas Island off the coast of the East Antarctic Wilkesland .
It was first mapped using aerial photographs from Operation Highjump (1946–1947). The designation for the black ( Russian чёрный , transliteration Černyj, transcription Tschorny ) rock of the island goes to participants of the Second Soviet Antarctic Expedition (1956-1958) back.
