Curt Hoffmann (botanist)

Curt Hoffmann (born October 24, 1898 in Dahlen , † June 1, 1959 in Kiel ) was a German botanist .

Life

The son of the Dahlen doctor Oskar Hoffmann attended the Königin-Carola-Gymnasium in Leipzig from 1909 , which he left with the emergency certificate during the First World War in 1917. From 1917 to 1924 he studied natural sciences at the University of Leipzig - interrupted by being a prisoner of war . In the course of the First World War he was drafted into military service and was a British prisoner of war from 1918 to 1919 . After receiving his doctorate on June 24, 1924, he was scientific assistant to the karyologist Georg Tischler at the Botanical Institute of the University of Kiel .

His interest in algology developed from a friendship with Wilhelm Nienburg .

In 1937 Curt Hoffmann became head of the marine botanical laboratory at the Institute for Oceanography in Kiel, newly established under Adolf Remane , which was destroyed in the Second World War.

After 1945, Curt Hoffmann played a major role in the rebuilding of this institute. In 1946 he became associate professor and in 1956 full professor for marine botany at the University of Kiel. In addition to his teaching activities, his research was particularly interested in the physiology and ecology of higher marine algae.

He was co-editor of the scientific journal Botanica Marina .
