The Curti-Haus is a town house at Curtiplatz at the western end of the historic old town of Rapperswil , a district of the Swiss municipality of Rapperswil-Jona in the canton of St. Gallen .

Building history

The Curti House, whose core dates back to the 16th century, forms the interface between the city fortifications in the west of the old town , the monastery district and the facilities in the port area on Lake Zurich , which existed until the 1830s . In 1665, the silk merchant Giacomo Maria Curti, who came from Milan, was granted civil rights in the city of Rapperswil and acquired the property at Fischmarktplatz  9, which is now the train station pharmacy. In 1768 the Schlossberg family was transferred from the silk merchant Anton Brentona to the Curti family. One of the oldest photos of Rapperswil shows the building sold in 1889 to Baron Maximilian Scherer von Castell, a textile merchant from St. Gallen.

In 1919, the Curti family also acquired the adjacent property on Schlossberg , which is why the building is usually called Lower Curti House and the neighboring Schlossberg Upper Curti House .

architecture

Scherer von Castell had the property rebuilt and the facade decorated with mosaics and history paintings in 1894, which testify to the joy of design in the fin de siècle . The northeast side of the building is decorated with two motifs relating to the history of the city of Rapperswil : the left shows the destruction of Rapperswil in 1350, the right mural depicts Rapperswil joining the Swiss Confederation . The southwest side shows, among other things, portraits of prominent citizens of Rapperswil , Johann Peter Dietrich and Otto von Rambach, and above the entrance portal is a portrait of Felix Maria Diogg .
