Curuguaty ( Guaraní : Kuruguaty ) is a city and an administrative district ( distrito ) in the northeast of the South American Republic of Paraguay . It is located in the Canindeyú department . The city had 75,510 inhabitants in 2002.

geography

Curuguaty is located in a part of Paraguay that benefits from its altitude (on average 400 meters above sea level) and the rich vegetation of the Atlantic Forest , the Mata Atlântica (Spanish: Mata atlántica). The maximum temperatures in the (southern) summer are 39 ° Celsius, the temperatures in winter drop to 0 ° Celsius.

The population of Curuguaty is partly descended from immigrants from Brazil . The area around the city is characterized by agriculture and forestry. Yerba mate is a local product . The name of the city was given by the pumpkin fruit Curugua (Latin: Sicana odorifera , also Cucurbita odorifera ).

history

The city of Curuguaty was founded on the banks of the river of the same name on May 15, 1712 by Juan Gregorio de Bazán y Pedraza with the name Villa de San Isidro Labrador de los Reyes Católicos de Curuguaty . It is the birthplace of one of the founding fathers of Paraguay, Mauricio José Troche , who today bears the honorary title of Libertador and is the namesake of the Paraguayan city and the department of General Mauricio José Troche .

The founding father of Uruguay, José Gervasio Artigas, lived in exile in Curuguaty for more than 30 years since the 1810s during the rule of the Creator of Paraguay and dictator José Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia .

During the retreat of the dictator Marshal Francisco Solano López at the end of the Triple Alliance War against Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay, the latter declared Curuguaty to be his fourth and last capital in 1869. His vice-president, Domingo Francisco Sánchez Corvalán, settled there with the state treasure and church treasures, before he was slain by Brazilian soldiers in 1870 in the last battle in which López was killed near the city.

In recent years, and most recently in June 2012, there have been clashes in and around Curuguaty between landless farmers and law enforcement officers who want to fight for their right to land ownership. In the years of Stroessner's dictatorship until 1989, millions of hectares of land had gone to the representatives of the upper class, the latifundia owners, such as the politician and entrepreneur Blas Riquelme . After two farmers were found dead on its property and a group of landless farmers protested, clashes during evictions led to further deaths. A total of 17 people died, including six police officers.

economy

The people of Curuguaty live mainly from the agriculture and livestock that is practiced in the area. Other sources of income are logging and wood processing as well as the cultivation of yerba mate .

tourism

Curuguaty is approx. 240 km from the capital of Paraguay, Asúnción, and can be reached via the motorway towards Itaipú and via country roads. The Itaipú reservoir and the protected jungle in the Mbaracayú Forest National Reserve are attractions on the way to the city. There are also villages of the indigenous M'byá Guaraní and the Aché (Guayaki) nearby . The city itself still houses memorabilia from the war almost 150 years ago in the museum. The house of the Uruguayan freedom fighter Artigas , the Solar de Artigas , can also be visited there.
