Cyanea Pohaku is an extinct Hawaiian plant species from the family of Bellflower Family (Campanulaceae) formed on Maui endemic was.

description

Cyamea pohaku was a branched tree that reached a height of 7 meters. The fleshy, obscure-lanceolate leaves were 16 to 30 centimeters long. The upper side of the leaf was dark green, the underside of the leaf light green. The midrib was thickly protruding. The leaf veins were indented and transparent. The upper leaf margin was notched, the lower entire margin. The hanging inflorescence was almost three feet long. Each inflorescence had four to eight gently curved greenish-white flowers that were up to 45 mm long. The fruits are unknown.

Occurrence and habitat

Cyanea pohaku was discovered on the northwest slopes of Mount Haleakala at Puunianiau crater at an altitude of 2,130 m. The habitat was subalpine bushland with ash or lava soils.

die out

Cyanea pohaku is known only from three specimens herbarium collected in October 1910 by Joseph Francis Rock. In 1918 Rock visited the site again and could not find any more specimens. The main cause is the conversion of the semi-arid and dry scrubland into pastureland and the destruction of the endemic vegetation by goats.

Systematics

Joseph Francis Rock mentioned this plant species in 1913 in his work The Indigenous Trees of the Hawaiian Islands under the name Clermontia haleakalensis . In 1988 it was described again by Thomas G. Lammers under the name Cyanea pohaku . The type epithet honors Joseph Rock, as pohaku is the Hawaiian word for rock .
