Cylindromyia brassicaria is a two-winged bird from the family of caterpillars (Tachinidae).

features

Cylindromyia brassicaria reaches a body length of 9–13 mm. The middle section of the abdomen of the otherwise gray-black colored flies is orange. In the orange-colored area, a black wedge protrudes from the front and from the back. The flies have black bristles. The transparent wings are colored orange on the inner leading edge. There are white lobes below the wings. In the female, the red-brown eyes are separated by a white area with a black central line.

Cylindromyia brassicaria occurs in large parts of Europe. Its distribution area includes Central Europe, the British Isles, Scandinavia and Southern Europe.

Way of life

Meadows and hedges form the typical habitat of Cylindromyia brassicaria . The adults fly from June to August. They are found on meadow hogweed ( Heracleum sphondylium ), where they suck on pollen and nectar. Cylindromyia brassicaria belongs to the subfamily Phasiinae , whose representatives lay their eggs on bedbugs and whose hatched larvae develop within the corresponding host. The following host animals are known for Cylindromyia brassicaria : in addition to the berry bug ( Dolycoris baccarum ), Peribalus strictus , the green stink bug ( Palomena prasina ), Aelia rostrata , Eurygaster integriceps and the strip bug ( Graphosoma lineatum ) are mentioned.
