Peribalus strictus ( Syn . : Holcostethus strictus vernalis ) is a bug from the family of stink bugs (Pentatomidae).

features

The bugs are 8.5 to 10.5 millimeters long. They are greenish brown in color and dotted with black. In spring and summer they are usually lighter, in autumn they are darker. The fourth and fifth link of the red-yellow (red-brown in autumn) antennae are each typically broadly ringed with black. The side edge of the pronotum, which is more concave behind the eyes, has a yellowish border and is interrupted at the widest point of the pronotum by a short dark strip. The tip of the scutellum is yellow-white. The connexive at the edge of the abdomen has a light and dark pattern. One can distinguish the species from Holcostethus sphacelatus in that in Peribalus strictus the cheeks touch at the tip of the head and enclose the frontal wedge ( tylus ).

distribution and habitat

The species is distributed in Europe, with the exception of the north of the British Isles and Scandinavia, east across Siberia and Central Asia to northern China and Japan. In Central Europe it is widespread and mostly common in the south. In the lowlands of northern Germany it is rarer and locally widespread. Dry to moderately moist, warm areas are settled. The species has always been rare in Great Britain. Many historical finds presumably relate to immigrant animals. The species is believed to be indigenous in several places in Kent and Sussex . All evidence after 1950 relates to the south coast, which suggests that attempts to resettle from the south are obvious. Recently the species seems to have established itself in the area around Boscombe ( Bournemouth ).

Way of life

The animals can be found in the herbaceous layer and on deciduous trees. They are polyphagous , with the nymphs primarily suckling on the ripe seeds and fruits of herbaceous plants such as the daisy family (Asteraceae) and legumes (Fabaceae). The adults are often found in spring and autumn while suckling on flowering and fruit-bearing shrubs and trees and also often on the flowers of umbellifers (Apiaceae) and figwort plants (Scrophulariaceae), such as mullein ( Verbascum ). The wintering takes place as adults. In the following year you can find them until the end of July, from August the new adult generation appears.
