Holcostethus (Holcostethus) sphacelatus is a bug from the family of stink bugs (Pentatomidae).

features

The bugs are 9 to 10 millimeters or 8 to 10.2 millimeters long. They are brown in color, with regular, close-fitting, black dots, the distance between them being about the same as the diameter of the dots. The front edge of the pronotum is set off in white, its side edge forms a set off, yellowish colored edge. The scutellum is about as long as it is wide. Its brightly colored lower end is broadly rounded. At the front edge, towards the pronotum, there is a row of three to five light-colored swellings (generic feature). The tylus (frontal wedge) is not enclosed by the Juga (in contrast to Peribalus strictus and all other species of the genus Peribalus ). The antennae are banded in black and white, in which the base of each antenna segment is brightly colored. The connexive (part of the abdomen that is visible on the side) is piebald in black and white. The underside is light colored and dotted quite densely.

The straight, non-concave, side edge and the shape of the side edge of the pronotum, the slightly larger body size and the more regular puncturing of the top distinguish from the similar, but only common in the Mediterranean region, Holcostethus albipes .

distribution

The distribution area of the bug species includes the Mediterranean and southern Central Europe and extends from North Africa to the German low mountain range. It occurs in the Turkish Black Sea region, but is absent in the Middle East. At the northern limit of detection in Central Europe, only older evidence is available, although recently, as with many thermophilic species, a re-expansion towards the north has been observed.

Way of life

The bugs can be found on various herbaceous plants such as mullein ( Verbascum ), tansy ( Tanacetum vulgare ) and Lavandula pedunculata . The flight time of adult bedbugs is from March to October. The bug species overwinters as an imago.

Taxonomy

The species was first described by Johann Christian Fabricius as Cimex sphacelatus . By a subsequent decision by Kirkaldy in 1909, it is a type of the genus Holcostethus fever.
