George Willis Kirkaldy (born July 26, 1873 in Clapham , United Kingdom , † February 2, 1910 in San Francisco , USA ) was an English entomologist who specialized in the group of Hemiptera . He was a member of the Royal Entomological Society .
Kirkaldy was trained in England and went to Hawaii in 1903 to work first for the United States Department of Agriculture and then for the Hawaiian Sugar Planters' Association at their research station. Kirkaldy is the author of important works on cicadas, such as the Catalog of the Hemiptera (Heteroptera) published in 1909 , which describes biological and anatomical details as well as food plants and parasites.
He also wrote many taxonomic papers that describe new species and genera. The genera he describes include Ohchisme , Dolichisme , Elachisme , Florichisme , Isachisme , Marichisme , Nanichisme , Peggichisme and Polychisme . The Greek suffix “-chisme” is pronounced like “kiss me” in English. Kirkaldy put the names of various taxa he discovered before the names of women with whom he was said to have had a romantic relationship.
His collections of Auchenorrhyncha and Heteroptera are housed in the Natural History Museum in London , the University of Kansas (Snow Collection) in the Bernice P. Bishop Museum in Honolulu, and the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC .
