Eteobalea intermediella is a butterfly ( moth ) fromthe splendor butterfly family (Cosmopterigidae).

features

The moths reach a wingspan of 11 to 17 millimeters. The forewings become a little narrower towards the apex . The drawing is similar to Eteobalea serratella , but the pale gold spot below the third white costal spot is missing.

The males have a long tegumen that tapers slightly at the back and has a rounded bulge. The right brachium is slightly curved and about three times as long as the left. The tip is rounded and widened and heavily sclerotized . The left brachium has a square apex. The blades are concave and have a rounded cucullus. The right valve is parallel-walled and gradually tapers to a blunt point. The aedeagus is rather slender and curved, the tubular part tapers sharply to a sharp point. The genital armature of the males differs from Eteobalea beata and Eteobalea sumptuosella by the rounded, widened and sclerotized tip of the right brachium and the slender aedeagus with a wide tubular section and the large, tapering anellus arm.

In females, the 8th segment is about as long as it is wide. The ostium is semicircular or oval. The sterigma narrows distally . The ductus bursae is slightly shorter than the corpus bursae is long. The corpus bursae is elongated and broadest in front. It tapers slightly towards the rear and has two sickle-shaped signs of different sizes.

Similar species

Eteobalea intermediella is very similar to Eteobalea beata and Eteobalea sumptuosella , but differs from these species by the third costal spot. This is smaller, more square, concave on the inside and convex on the outside . A reliable identification of the species is only possible through a genital examination .

distribution

Eteobalea intermediella is common in Central and Southern Europe , the Caucasus , Asia Minor , the Near and Middle East, and Central Asia. The species is also found in Algeria and Morocco .

biology

The caterpillars develop on real toadflax ( Linaria vulgaris ), Linaria pontica , gorse toadflax ( Linaria genistifolia ), dalmatian toadflax ( Linaria dalmatica ) and daisy hole throat ( Anarrhinum bellidifolium ). The females lay the eggs in groups at the lower part of the stem and the caterpillars bore into the main root from there. They are often sociable and eat both the root bark and the core. The number of caterpillars per root depends on the diameter of the root.

The caterpillars of the last stage, on the other hand, eat again in the lower areas of the stalk, a number of shoots are clearly damaged. The caterpillars pupate in the base of the stem or in the upper part of the root. The pre-imaginal stages are very similar to those of Eteobalea serratella , differences were only found in the structure of the egg membrane. The species forms two generations per year, in the north and east of the range only one generation occurs. The moths fly from early May to early November.
