Eteobalea sumptuosella is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of cosmopterigidae (Cosmopterigidae).

features

The moths reach a wingspan of 13 to 20 millimeters. The head and labial palps are white. The terminal link of the latter is black at the tip. The antennae are black. The legs are ringed white and black. Eteobalea sumptuosella is very similar to Eteobalea intermediella and Eteobalea beata , but differs from these species in the bronze sheen of the pale gold markings on the forewings and the wide, pale gold rear border of the thorax and tegulae . Eteobalea sumptuosella differs from Eteobalea intermediella by the third costal spot, which is larger and more or less clearly elongated towards the apex . A reliable differentiation is only possible through genital examination .

In the males, the tegumen is wide. It narrows slightly at the back and has a V-shaped bulge. The right brachium is curved and two to two and a half times as long as the left. The tip is widened and severely sclerotized . The left brachium is pointed. The blades are short and boot-shaped. The right valvella is thickest in the middle and tapers to a rounded apex. The aedeagus is strongly curved. The bulbous part is almost circular, the tubular part tapers very strongly distally to a pointed apex. In specimens from the western Mediterranean the aedeagus is less curved. The tubular part is almost parallel-walled and wider. The tip of the right brachium is less sclerotized. The characteristics of specimens from the former Yugoslavia are intermediate to those of the western and eastern Mediterranean. The large and rounded tip of the right brachium, the almost circular, bulbous part of the aedeagus and the trapezoidal right valvella distinguish the species from Eteobalea beata and Eteobalea intermediella .

In females, the 8th segment is shorter than it is wide. The ostium is oval. The sterigma is sack-shaped. The ductus bursae is two thirds as long as the corpus bursae. The corpus bursae has a short process behind. Two crescent-shaped signs are formed, the left one is often very small and occasionally missing.

distribution

Eteobalea sumptuosella is widespread in the Mediterranean region from Spain to Turkey . In addition, the species has been detected in Morocco and Tunisia in North Africa . In the east the distribution area extends to the Ukraine , the south of Russia, the Caucasus , the Middle East , Kazakhstan , Turkmenistan and Afghanistan , the United Arab Emirates and Central Asia .

biology
