Royal Entomological Society of London
The Royal Entomological Society of London , formerly the Entomological Society of London , is a scientific society devoted to the study of insects . It has a leading international role in insect research, dissemination and publication of information about insects, and communication among entomologists worldwide.
The society was founded in 1833 as the Entomological Society of London. It had several precursors starting with the Society of Entomologists of London.
Founding history
The foundation of the society began with a meeting of "gentlemen and friends of entomological science" on May 3, 1833 in the British Museum at the invitation of Nicholas Aylward Vigors , chaired by John George Children . Present were Reverend Frederick William Hope , William Yarrell , John Edward Gray , James Francis Stephens , Thomas Horsfield , George Thomas Rudd (* around 1795, † 1847) and George Robert Gray . Letters from Adrian Hardy Haworth , George Bennett (1804-1893) and John Curtis were read, welcoming the event and supporting its cause.
Those in attendance founded the Society for the Advancement of the Science of Entomology in all its branches under the name "Entomological Society of London". JG Children, FW Hope, JF Stephens, W. Yarrell and G. Rudd were elected to the board, with George Robert Gray as secretary. JG Children was elected first president and William Kirby was elected honorary chairman for life. At another meeting, probably on May 2, 1833, the members met at the Thatched house Tavern on St James' S Street. During the meeting, George Robert Waterhouse was appointed administrator of the library and files. The following foreign members were also elected: Johann Christoph Friedrich Klug , Wilhem de Haan , Victor Audouin , Johann Ludwig Christian Carl Gravenhorst , Christian Rudolph Wilhelm Wiedemann , Carl Eduard Hammerschmidt and Alexandre Louis Lefèbvre de Cérisy (1798–1867). William Blundell Spence (1814-1900), the son of William Spence , was entrusted with the task of keeping in touch with the other European entomologists.
