William Weekes Fowler
William Weekes Fowler (born January 1849 in Tavistock , † June 3, 1923 in the sacristy of his parish church in Earley , Reading / Wokingham Urban Area ) was a British clergyman and entomologist .
Life
He was the son of Hugh Fowler, Vicar of Barnwood in Gloucestershire, and went to rugby school . He studied at Oxford at Jesus College (MA, D.Sc.), became a teacher (master) at a school in Repton (Derbyshire) in 1873 and was ordained in 1875. In 1880 he became headmaster of the Lincoln Grammar School. Later he was employed again as a pastor, first three years as rector in Rotherfield Peppard at Henley-on-Thames and from 1904 as vicar in St. Peters in Earley, in Reading. In 1907 he was president of the Headmasters Association. He was a canon of Lincoln Cathedral (from 1887).
As an entomologist, he first dealt with butterflies and then mainly with beetles. He wrote a monograph on the beetles of Great Britain.
In 1906/7 he was Vice President of the Linnean Society of London . He was secretary of the Royal Entomological Society for ten years before becoming its president in 1901. For 38 years he was one of the editors of Entomologist's Monthly Magazine. In 1893 he published a catalog of British beetles with David Sharp . He also wrote parts of the Schnabelkerfen (Hemiptera) in the collective work Biologia Centrali-Americana.
Most of his collection is in the Nottingham Natural History Museum.
He had been married since 1875 and had two sons and two daughters.
