Patrick Alfred Buxton (born March 24, 1892 in Paddington , † December 13, 1955 in Gerrards Cross , Buckinghamshire ) was a British entomologist specializing in medical entomology ( parasitology ).

Life

Buxton was the son of a banker and he was shaped by the family's Quaker tradition. His mother was a Jex-Blake (with a tradition of female professors in Oxford and Cambridge). Buxton studied science at Trinity College in Cambridge and then medicine at St. George's Hospital in London. As early as the First World War he was collecting insects in Mesopotamia and Persia for medical purposes. From 1923 to 1925 he led an expedition to Samoa, the New Hebrides and the West Pacific Islands. In 1925 he succeeded Alfred Alcock (1859-1933) as head of entomology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine . In 1933 he became professor of entomology at the University of London. There he worked with Vincent Wigglesworth on insect physiology.

His 1939 study of the louse, in which he used himself and friends and family as test subjects, was well known.

During World War II, his insecticide research was important in combating typhoid fever in Italy and other insect-borne diseases among soldiers and civilians.

In addition to insects, he also published on ornithology .

He was a Fellow of the Royal Society (1943) and the Linnean Society of London , whose Linné Medal he received. He was also Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG). In 1942/43 and 1953754 he was President of the Royal Entomological Society of London . He was also President of the Linnean Society and a member of the Medical Research Council.
