William Spence

William Spence (* baptized 1782 in Bishop Burton , † January 6, 1860 ) was a British entomologist and economist .

Life

Spence was the son of a Yorkshire farmer and trained as a businessman. In 1804 he married Elizabeth Blundell and started a successful oil and paint company with his brother-in-law Henry. Around the same time he began to be interested in insects and corresponded with the entomologist William Kirby , with whom he published a very successful popular science introduction to entomology from 1815 to 1826 (Introduction to Entomology, 4 volumes). He also published entomological articles and on trade (Tracts on Political Economy 1822). Spence lived in Kingston upon Hull and published a newspaper there (Hull Rockingham).

In 1834 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society . In 1833 he was one of the founders of the Royal Entomological Society of London and in 1847 its president. In 1851 he became a member of the Leopoldina . When La Société Cuvierienne was founded in 1838 , he was one of the 140 founding members of the society.

The art dealer and painter William Blundell Spence (1814–1900) was his son. He lived in Florence and painted alpine landscapes.
