Victor Antoine Signoret

Victor Antoine Signoret (born April 6, 1816 in Paris , † April 3, 1889 there ) was a French entomologist .

Signoret studied medicine and pharmacy and received his doctorate in Montpellier in 1845 with a dissertation on arsenic ( De l'Arsenic considéré sous ses divers points de vue ). He was full-time pharmacist and collected while traveling in Europe and Asia Minor insects, while drawing on beetles and Schnabelkerfen specialized (Hemiptera), in particular he was an expert on scale insects . His collection is in the Natural History Museum Vienna .

Some first descriptions come from him, for example from his description of hemipterans from Madagascar (1860). He was considered one of the first real experts on hemipterans. Several species are named after him.

Besides entomology, he has also published on pharmacy.

Memberships and honors

He was a member of the French Entomological Society (and its President) and an honorary member of the Entomological Society of London . In 1842 Signoret was introduced by Eduardo Carreño (1819–1842) as member number 249 of the Société cuviérienne .
