William Wilson Saunders

William Wilson Saunders (born June 4, 1809 in Little London near Wendover (Buckinghamshire) , † September 13, 1879 in Worthington (Leicestershire) ) was a British botanist and entomologist . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Saunders ".

Live and act

His father was vicar at Kirtlington, Oxfordshire, and Saunders was privately tutored and at the East India Company Military Academy in Addiscombe. He was then a pioneer officer and went to India in 1830. He returned only a year later and went into the insurance industry, initially as an employee of his future father-in-law Joshua Saunders. Like him, he was an underwriter of Lloyd's of London , was on their committee and on the Shipping Committee of Lloyds. He had an important collection of insects (especially butterflies, hymenoptera) described by Francis Walker and other entomologists (Insecta Saundersiana, 1850 to 1869). His collection contained numerous new species and he also collected plants described in Refugium Botanicum (London, 1869 to 1873) by botanists such as Reichenbach and JG Baker. Mycological Illustrations followed in 1871/72 (with Worthington G. Smith). He was known for his garden in Reigate , where he lived from 1857. In the economic crisis of 1873 his company went into decline and he had to sell his collections. He then moved to Worthington and devoted himself to his garden.

In 1841/42 and 1856/57 he was President of the Royal Entomological Society of London and from 1861 to 1873 Treasurer of the Linnean Society of London , of which he was a Fellow from 1833. For several years he was Vice President of the Royal Horticultural Society. Around 35 scientific publications come from him.

He was a Fellow of the Royal Society (1853).

He was married three times.

The plant genus Saundersia Rchb.f. is named after him. from the orchid family .
