Cymothoa is a genus of fish that parasitize isopods . The species Cymothoa exigua is the first parasite that has been shown to functionally replace a destroyed body part, the tongue of the parasitized fish.

features

The cephalon of the Cymothoa species is usually clearly sunk into the first peraeon segment . The first antennas are widely spaced and do not have an enlarged first section. The anterior plates of the coxae do not reach the posterior margins of the corresponding peraeon segments, which the posterior plates do. The first three peraeopods are shorter than the following four, which have keels at their bases. The pleon is significantly narrower than the paereon and sunk into it, its segments become increasingly longer and wider towards the rear. The entire body is usually not twisted sideways.
