Cynthia Carroll (* 1957 ) is an American manager . From 2007 to 2013 she was Chief Executive Officer of the South African mining company Anglo American . Before that she worked for the aluminum smelter Alcan . In the list of 100 most powerful women in the world of Forbes Magazine , she was out in 14th place of 2010. Cynthia Carroll is the first woman and the first non-South African to take over the helm of the Anglo American corporation. In April 2013, she was replaced by Mark Cutifani as CEO of Anglo American.

She studied geology at the University of Kansas and business administration at Harvard University . She completed both courses with a master’s degree .
