Archimandrite Cyprian Kern (French Cyprien Kern) (born May 11, 1899 in Saint Petersburg , Russian Empire , † February 11, 1960 in Clamart , France ) was an Orthodox theologian and professor of patristic at the Institut de Théologie Orthodoxe Saint-Serge in Paris.

Life

Cyprian Kern was born in St. Petersburg as Konstantin Eduardowitsch Kern in a Russian academic family. His father was the director of the Imperial Forest Institute, and Cyprian Kern received an excellent education. He left Russia in 1917 because of the Russian Revolution and went to Belgrade in Serbia , where he studied first at the law and then at the theological faculty. In 1927 he became a monk.

In 1928 he became head of the Russian spiritual mission in Jerusalem. In 1931 he returned to Serbia. In 1936 he was appointed to the Chair of Pastoral Theology and Liturgy at the Institut de Théologie Orthodoxe Saint-Serge in Paris. In the 1940s he succeeded Georgi Wassiljewitsch Florowski as Professor of Patristic Studies. At the same time as his teaching activity he was chief clergyman of the Orthodox Church of Saint-Constantin-et-Hélène in Clamart near Paris.

One of his most important students is Alexander Schmemann .
