Cyrillus , also Cyrillos , Cyril or Kyril († in the 3rd century AD) was a bishop of Gortyna on the island of Crete , Greece. He has been venerated as a martyr since the early Middle Ages . The tradition is extremely unclear and contradictory.

According to legend, Cyrillus loved the Word of God from an early age. He became a bishop early and held this office for 50 years. He is said to have been captured at the age of 84. Cyrillus was brought before the governor Lucius and sentenced to death by fire. The fire, however, allegedly couldn't harm him. He is said to have been beheaded under the Roman emperors Decius or Maximian . According to another version, he is said to have been killed in 828 by Spanish Muslims who are said to have established colonies on the island of Crete. His feast day is July 9th. Along with St. George, Cyrillus is the patron saint of St. Georgen Monastery . When the convent was relocated from Hohentwiel to Stein am Rhein around 1005, the relics of the two saints were transferred from the abandoned altar to the new monastery.
