The gloomy cross

The Dark Cross is one of the few firefighters - monuments in Germany. It is in the forest near Nideggen in the Düren district , North Rhine-Westphalia .

The Düsterkreuz was erected in 1912 in memory of the fireman Heinrich Düster. Gloomy died at this point in a forest fire on September 9, 1911.

The fire broke out in the Jungholz between Nideggen and Rath . Heinrich Düster, then 24 years old and a member of the Nideggen volunteer fire brigade , was also busy extinguishing the fire. He was run over by a roller of fire and burned while trying to keep the flames away from an adjacent tall pine forest . His identity could only be established through the pocket watch he found.

On the board at the gloomy cross it says:

"In the courageous struggle for the beauty of his native heights and true to the voluntarily assumed duties, the fire fighter Heinrich Düster, Nideggen, died here in a flame on September 9, 1911."

In Nideggen, Heinrich-Düster-Strasse was named after the burned fireman.
