Les Double Six

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Les Double Six or The Double Six of Paris was a French jazz vocal ensemble (sextet) founded in 1959 by Mimi Perrin , who was also the director and arranger .

Mimi Perrin previously sang with the Blue Stars (with Christiane Legrand , Blossom Dearie and Christian Chevallier). It was founded under the impression of the success of the vocal trio Lambert, Hendricks & Ross . The name came from the fact that six more voices were added to the six voices of the musicians through overdubbing (realized by Jean-Michel Pou-Dubois), so that a whole big band spectrum resulted in the Vocalese style . After Mimi Perrin fell ill in early 1965 (she had had tuberculosis for a long time ), the group stopped in April 1965. From August 1965, Mimi Perrin re-founded the group. This group also disbanded in the fall of 1966 after it was briefly taken over by Jef Gilson for the sick Perrin. Some of the former members continued with the Swingle Singers , which group member Ward Swingle founded.

The group sang in the Vocalese style, for example based on compositions by Dizzy Gillespie and Quincy Jones . The poetic French texts came from Mimi Perrin. The members changed. In addition to Mimi Perrin, the members were Monique Aldebert (Monique Guérin), Louis Aldebert, Ward Swingle, Jean-Louis Conrozier, Christiane Legrand, Claude Germain, Jacques Denjean, Jean-Claude Briodin, Eddy Louiss , Claudine Barge, Robert Smart ( Bob Smart), Anne Vassiliu, Hélène Devos, Jef Gilson, Bernard Lubat , Gaëtan Dupenher, Roger Guérin .

Les Double Six were very successful in the 1960s and between 1964 and 1966 they won the Down Beat reader and critic polls in the vocal group category (and again the critic poll in 1967). They toured Canada and the United States, recorded with Cal Tjader , and performed at the 1964 Antibes Jazz Festival .

In the Dictionnaire du Jazz, Xavier Prévost particularly described Mimi Perrin's arrangements and texts as well as the group's stage presence as "a masterpiece never to be achieved again".
