Live and act

First as a clarinetist, Gilson began with Claude Luter in Boris Vian's band . Then he switched to the piano. The experience of Dizzy Gillespie's big band made him decide to become an arranger and big band leader. In his band u. a. Bill Coleman , Bernard Vitet , Jean-Louis Chautemps , François Jeanneau , Michel Portal , Jean-Luc Ponty , Bernard Lubat , Lloyd Miller and Henri Texier . In addition, he was temporarily musical director of the vocal sextet Les Double Six .

Gilson's disk recordings on which early ( Enfin! , Œil Vision ) compositions with tempo changes, bitonal layers and chromatic topics are included, first appeared on a mini label. Since 1964, the functional harmony has partly been overridden in his compositions , without, however, being exclusively oriented towards free jazz ( New Call from France , MPS 1966). Commercial success failed to materialize, so that in 1968 Gilson temporarily went to Madagascar . In 1971 he returned and initially oriented himself towards ethno-jazz and an "improvisation totale" . In 1973 he founded his label Palm , on which the recordings with the Orchester Europamerica , in which Butch Morris and Philippe Maté also played and with whom he could also be heard at the Moers Festival in 1979 , are lasting. In 1978 he received the Prix Boris Vian for his first, more thoroughly arranged record, which reflected the achievements of free jazz . He last lived in seclusion in the Ardèche department .
