DI is a punk band from Orange County, California, founded in 1981 .
history
DI was founded by Casey Royer in 1981, while his main band Adolescents , where he was the drummer, had temporarily disbanded. The abbreviation "DI" stands for "Drug Ideology". The first EP still contained material that Royer had originally written for the Adolescents. In the following years, the band DI was often temporarily shelved, but reactivated again and again with Royer as the only constant member. The band is closely linked to the Adolescents and Social Distortion .
1983 DI had an appearance in the film Suburbia by director Penelope Spheeris , which gave the band some popularity. In 1996 the thrash metal band Slayer covered the DI song Richard Hung Himself for their album Undisputed Attitude . In 2008 guitarist Craig Jewett was diagnosed with throat cancer; as a result there was a benefit concert with u. a. TSOL and Agent Orange . Singer Royer was arrested in March 2011 and sentenced to 90 days in prison in April for using heroin in the presence of his twelve-year-old son.
style
Steven Blush sees the band as closely related to the Orange County's punk and hardcore scenes, both stylistically and personally. a. Social Distortion, which was owned by Adolescents, Agent Orange, and TSOL. The music news magazine Blabbermouth describes the band as "punk pioneers" and their music as "hard-hitting, controversial punk rock". The Hawaiian newspaper Star Advertiser defines the band's music as "die-hard, old-school punk, O (range) C (ounty) style".
