The DAC 120 DE is a Romanian large dump truck manufactured by ROMAN , which was manufactured during the time of the Romanian Revolution in 1989 and sold under the DAC brand . It was the heaviest and largest vehicle that the Romanian vehicle industry has ever produced.

Development history

The Romanian statesman Nicolae Ceaușescu pursued the goal that socialist Romania should rise to an industrial state with a differentiated vehicle construction sector . This project also included the production of large dump trucks, which until then could only be carried out by large western companies or, to a lesser extent, by the Soviet state-owned company BelAZ . Following this political doctrine , the Romanian vehicle manufacturer ROMAN developed and manufactured various dump truck models. This culminated in the most powerful DAC 120 DE model. For this purpose, a Lectra Haul large dump truck was procured to study the vehicle extensively. The knowledge gained from this flowed significantly into the model development.

technology

The dump truck has a diesel-electric drive on the rear wheels, which are driven by two electric motors. The electric motors supplied by the Romanian locomotive manufacturer Electroputere had a maximum output of 520 hp (382 kW) each. The maximum speed of the truck was 70 km / h when empty and 55 km / h when fully loaded. Because of the high loads, the rear axle has double tires on each side. Michelin manufactured the six tubeless tires . They are over three feet in diameter and cost $ 10,000 each at the time. The driver's cab above the engine compartment, which is secured against falling objects, can be reached via a ladder-stair combination at the front of the vehicle.

Production and use

A total of 16 DAC 120 DE were built, of which eight in the Roşia Poieni - copper mine and three in the limestone quarry Mahmudia were used. For the then financially weak Romania, the export of five of these vehicles to Australia was of particular importance. They were transported by ship “Down Under”, assembled there and used in the Mc Caimy Monster Pilbara open-cast iron ore mine . The purchase price for a DAC 120 DE was 300,000 US dollars at the time, which was many times cheaper than other large dump trucks in this class.
