The newspaper was published by Dag Media, a joint venture of PCM Uitgevers , in which AD (in a joint venture with Wegener), NRC Handelsblad , de Volkskrant and Trouw, all the major national quality newspapers in the Netherlands, and the telecommunications company KPN . The editor-in-chief was Bob Witman, who was previously deputy editor-in-chief of de Volkskrant . The initial circulation was 300,000 copies, the widespread circulation in the first quarter of 2008 was 380,269 copies.

history

Since the turn of the millennium, the circulation figures of traditional newspapers have been falling in the Netherlands, on the one hand due to competition from free newspapers, of which the offshoot of the Swedish free newspaper metro , launched in June 1999, was the pioneer together with Sp! Ts , and on the other hand due to new media such as the Internet.

PCM Uitgevers also wanted to enter the free newspaper market, but was looking for a joint venture. The investor Marcel Boekhoorn was originally intended as a partner, but ultimately PCM Uitgevers decided on KPN. Boekhoorn in turn started its own free newspaper called De Pers and published it a few months before the appearance of DAG . The first edition of DAG appeared on May 8, 2007 . The newspaper recently employed around 40 editors, four of whom were responsible for the online edition. The latter had integrated RSS - web feeds and videos as integral parts. The print edition could be viewed in full in the original layout on the newspaper's homepage, and there was also an edition for mobile devices. On September 30, 2008, the printed version of DAG was discontinued. A year later, in 2009, the online editorial office of the paper was also closed.
