DA Youth (short: DAY ) is the youth organization of the South African Democratic Alliance (DA). It was founded in 2008.

Goals and Organization

The goals of DA Youth are to mobilize young people between the ages of 15 and 31 for the goals of the party, to enable political work, to identify and deal with youth issues in South Africa, and to support young leaders. To this end, a program for young leaders (YLP) was initiated, in which 15 to 20 people between 18 and 35 can take part each year; participation is independent of party membership.

The DA Youth is led by a federal youth executive committee headed by the federal youth leader. It is elected by the Federal Youth Congress. At the provincial level, the Executive Committee is elected by the Provincial Youth Congress; There are nine political provinces, analogous to the South African provincial division. The regional committees and local branches form the lower organizational units. The DASO student association forms its own local groups.

No additional fee has to be paid for membership in the DA Youth, the members pay to the parent party of which they have to be a member.

Relationship to ANCYL

In September 2011, Moeletsi Mbeki called on the DA and its youth organization at a conference of the party to support the ANC Youth League (ANCYL) for the benefit of the country's economic development. Both the ANCYL and the DA viewed this request with skepticism.

To expel the President of ANCYL, Julius Malema , the DAY published a short press release in which it called for a return to the existing problems of the country and the youth.

In mid-March 2012, DAY attacked the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) on a massive scale, calling it a " bribe facility " for ANCYL. This was preceded by the distribution of 540,000 Rand in the Eastern Cape for the benefit of the ANC youth organization alone. The chairman of the agency then called the DA Youth “useless” and without any programmatic content.

Press

At the beginning of 2012, DAY attracted attention with a poster advertisement. One poster showed a multiracial couple hugging. The leader of the United Christian Democratic Party called it "sexually immoral" and a call for promiscuity . The chairman of DAY contradicted this: The poster was the impetus for a new debate on the race question . The campaign was discussed intensively on Facebook .
