Dongfeng 5
Dongfeng 5 or DF-5 (NATO code: CSS-4 ) is the name of a land-based ballistic ICBM of the People's Republic of China .
development
The China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology (CALT) developed the rocket from 1965. The deputy chief designer was Wang Yongzhi (王永志, * 1932), a graduate of the Moscow State Aviation Institute and later from 1992 to 2006 technical director of the manned space program of the People's Republic of China . The first test flight took place on September 10, 1971. After a long development period, on May 18, 1980, with a take-off preparation time of eight hours, the first long-distance flight into a sea area northeast of Australia took place. After this test was successful, the first rockets were used by the People's Liberation Army in 1981to hand over. The People's Liberation Army equipped three brigades with a total of 20 to 30 units. The DF-5 is the People's Republic of China's first ICBM.
The improved version DF-5A / CSS-4A was introduced in 1986. This version has MIRV warheads and an improved guidance system. A hit accuracy ( CEP ) of around 500 m is achieved. It formed the basis for the later civil launch rocket Langer Marsch 2 .
technology
The missiles are stored in armored silos and are launched directly from them. The time for the start preparation is 100 to 120 minutes. Some of the missiles are stored in underground bunkers. At the start, the rockets are transported from the bunkers to a launch table and made ready for launch there.
Dongfeng 5 is a two-stage liquid rocket engine . It uses the storable liquid fuels UDMH and nitrogen tetroxide as fuel . It is controlled by means of an inertial navigation system . The missile is armed with a single multi-megaton warhead. A precision of 1,000 to 1,500 m is achieved.
Due to the poor accuracy of the hit, the DF-5 can only be used against "soft targets" such as population centers, industrial complexes , port facilities and railway junctions . US and NATO experts rate them as an ineffective second-strike weapon . The improved DF-5A, on the other hand, is classified as a first strike weapon .
status
The People's Liberation Army had a population of 20 DF-5s in 2009. These are sorted out in the coming years and DF-31A and still in the testing phase present gemirvte heavy DF-41 will be replaced.
