The umbrella organization DHB - Network Household, professional association of household leaders based in Bonn , is an interest group for people who run a household . Until September 23, 2009, the organization was called the “German Housewives Association, Professional Association of Household Leaders” (DHB). The association defines itself as a non-partisan and non- denominational professional association of household managers. At the same time it has the function of an employers' association and as such concludes collective agreements with unions for employees in private households. The president is Elke Wieczorek.

The association founded in 1915 as the Deutscher Hausfrauenbund by Hedwig Heyl , among others , came into being against the backdrop of the women's movement after professional groups such as midwives and teachers had previously organized themselves into associations. One of the early goals was to improve the vocational training of women working in the household, for example with regard to their economic or nutritional hygiene qualifications, but also to influence price movements for food. The federal government finally put the recognition of domestic work as a qualified professional work by established and in 1925 a Germany-wide Master examination regulations for housekeeping .

The DHB also tested and assessed household appliances and, if successful, awarded them its quality mark , a stylized sun.

As a forerunner of the first consumer advice centers, the “Housekeeping Advice and Information Service” was founded in Berlin in 1927 . The DHB evaded integration into the National Socialist " Reichsgemeinschaft Deutscher Hausfrauen " ( Reichsgemeinschaft Deutscher Hausfrauen ) through its self-dissolution in 1935. In the post-war period it was re-established in the form of numerous local associations. Since then, the chairpersons of the DHB have included Emmy Lüthje (1949–1952), Fini Pfannes (1952–1956) and Siglinde Porsch (1985–1997).

The main topics of the DHB today are consumer protection , housekeeping, family and work. Among other things, he is committed to more political attention and recognition of the provision, upbringing and care provided in private households as well as to a better compatibility of family and gainful employment . The DHB imparts everyday skills through home economics education and maintains wage and general tariffs for employees in private households and domestic service centers.

Today the DHB is organized in 16 regional associations and a total of 300 local associations. With the DHB magazine , he has his own association magazine as a communication platform for its members. In addition, the DHB regional associations publish yearbooks once a year with the title DHB annual calendar for household and family .
