DJ Qbert (born October 7, 1969 in Daly City ; real name Richard Quitevis ) is co-founder and one of the most important DJs in the American turntablism scene. In addition to DJ Disk and DJ Flare , he is considered a pioneer of turntablism; many of the scratches practiced worldwide today are his invention. Qbert's name comes from the 1982 arcade game Q * bert .

Life

The DJ from San Francisco has been playing records since the early 1980s. Together with Mix Master Mike and DJ Apollo , he formed the FM20 crew . At the invitation of Crazy Legs , who had seen them play in New York , they became members of the Rock Steady Crew . As Rocksteady DJs , they won the DMC Championships in 1992 and also won the subsequent ones.

DJ Qbert also founded the legendary turntablism crew The Invisibl Skratch Piklz , other members are Yogafrog , D-Styles and DJ Flare .

In 1997 the album Camel Bobsled Race was released , on which Qbert can be heard with a live mix of music by DJ Shadow .

In 1998 he appeared in the documentary Hang the DJ . In the same year Qbert released the first pure scratch album under the title Wavetwisters . A complete cartoon of the same name was created for this album in 2001. Images and animations were created here to match the sound.

Qbert's record label Dirtstyle Records is one of the most important in the sector of pure scratch records, i.e. records that are not intended for normal listening, but only contain beat loops and short sound and voice samples .
